Mission Statement
The Mosquito Abatement Department (BCMA) will defend the health and well-being of Berkeley County's citizens from disease and discomfort caused by mosquitoes, using integrated mosquito management practices which are effective, economical and protective of human health and the environment.
Services
BMCA strives to reduce and control the mosquito population in Berkeley County. This ongoing effort involves a number of strategies, including:
Surveillance and Inspection
Mosquito Abatement personnel use several measures (including landing rate counts, light trap collections, larval sampling, and requests for service) to determine where control efforts are needed, the severity of the problem, and the types of control to implement.
Juvenile Mosquito Control
Mosquito Abatement is also responsible for larviciding throughout Berkeley County. Larviciding is a year-round process used to eliminate breeding sites and to kill mosquitoes when they are in the larval stage.
Adult Control
We take various measures to decrease the population of adult mosquitoes. We are responsible for adulticiding throughout Berkeley County. Exceptions include: City of Hanahan, which is sprayed by Hanahan Public Works; City of Goose Creek, which is sprayed by Goose Creek Public Works; and Bonneau Beach which is sprayed by Santee Cooper.
