2014 SC Earthquake Awareness Week

Governor Nikki Haley has proclaimed Earthquake Awareness Week for 2014 be observed October 12-18 in South Carolina. The S.C. Emergency Management Division encourages everyone to take this opportunity to learn about our state’s seismic fault system and how best to prepare for earthquakes. A highlight of the week will be the Great Southeast ShakeOut on Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 in the morning.

Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

Berkeley County is completing its update of the county’s 2010 Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) as required every five years by FEMA. The 2014 HMP update will address how the county and its municipalities will plan for mitigation of multiple natural hazards including flood, wind, fire, earthquake, thunderstorms and winter/ice storms. The 2014 HMP Plan will also include descriptions and assessments, then prioritize the risk of each of the natural hazards.

Berkeley County Mosquito Alert

Berkeley County Mosquito Abatement will be spraying, by aircraft, in the southern region of Berkeley County over portions of Daniel Island, Thomas Island, areas adjacent to Clements Ferry Road, and the dredge disposal sites along Clouter Creek. The aerial application will be made on Friday, October 3, between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. If unfavorable weather conditions exist, the applications will be made on the next suitable day. New Stormwater Utility Fee

Affected property owners of Berkeley County are notified of a new Stormwater Utility Fee in their October 2014 annual Tax Notice.  On July 28, 2014, Berkeley County Council adopted a Stormwater Management Utility Ordinance (Ordinance No. 14-07-21) that established the Stormwater Utility Fee. The fee and amount of the fee is listed as Stormwater Utility Fee on the Tax Notice.
