Berkeley County Officially Named as a part of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce recently announced that Berkeley County has been officially named as part of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. The National Heritage Corridor extends across 17 counties of the state, from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston. The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor was chosen as a National Heritage Area in 1996 because it contains historical, cultural, and natural resources that tell the vibrant story of South Carolina's centuries long evolution and culture.

On October 22nd, Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis, along with other elected officials and business leaders, joined representatives from the National Heritage Corridor who traveled from around the state to embark on a tour of Berkeley County's rich and diverse history.

"This was a wonderful experience for us," says Michelle McCollum, President and CEO of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor, "we were happy to be afforded the opportunity to not only learn more about Berkeley County, but also really get to know some of the wonderful people in this beautiful, historical area".

Through visitor's centers, interpretative signage, travel guides and maps, the Heritage Corridor Discovery System leads the visitor on a self-guided journey of experiences while telling the story of South Carolina's Native Americans, the Colonial Settlement and the western migration into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors may choose to explore a variety of sites in one geographic location or follow themes through the rural communities and historic back roads of South Carolina. And now, Berkeley County and all of its rich and history, culture and diversity will be part of this wonderful program.

"Being part of the National Heritage Corridor put Berkeley County on yet another map," says Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis, "we've been moving along nicely with some great economic development announcements. Becoming part of the National Heritage Corridor adds a new dimension to our tourism offerings and brings incredible new marketing potential for our area."

"This is such an exciting announcement for Berkeley County," say Elaine Morgan, CEO of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, "we especially want to thank Congressman Henry Brown for his hard work and efforts to help make this all happen".
