Underwater Heritage Trail

Berkeley County is home to South Carolina’s first Underwater Heritage Trail. The two-mile long Cooper River trail includes six marked archeological historical sites:

1. Strawberry Ferry: Remains of a 1781 British gunboat

2. Strawberry Ferry Landing: Established in 1705 on the western branch of the Cooper River

3. Pimlico Barge: Preserved so well it looks like it could still float today

4. Pimlico Shipwreck: Remains of a 69 foot large sailing vessel

5. Mepkin Abbey Plantation Dock

6. Mepkin Abbey Shipwreck: Features the remains of a small plantation shipping vessel with its cargo still on board

Divers from all over come to Berkeley County to experience this unique adventure. It is recommended for experienced divers only, and divers are encouraged to use safe diving practices, including the “buddy system”.

Directions: Cooper River Underwater Heritage Trail may be reached via charter, or private boats. A public boat landing (Durham Creek Landing) is located 2 miles downriver. To reach Durham Creek Landing from I26 east of Summerville, exit 199 and drive northwest on US17 for 6 miles and turn right onto County S-8-9. Durham Creek Landing is located on the left after crossing the bridge.
