Berkeley County Receives Grant To Implement Energy Efficient Upgrades

Berkeley County officials announced today that they applied for and received a grant from the South Carolina Energy Office (SCEO) to update outdated infrastructure and implement a number of energy efficient upgrades. Once the upgrades are complete, the County's projected cost-savings amount to approximately $121,000 annually.

Projects funded by the grant include:

• Replacing light fixtures, bulbs and ballasts with energy star qualified lights in the Berkeley County Courthouse, Courthouse Annex, Detention Center, Public Works Building, Maude Callen, Goose Creek Library, Library Administration Building, Airport Hangars and EMS Stations
• Replacing an aged LP boiler with an energy efficient LP boiler at the Berkeley County Health Department
• Replacing the old inefficient duct work and HVAC units/systems with energy efficient, programmable units at the Maude Callen Building
• Replacing HVAC units at the Goose Creek Public Library

"This grant allows us to continue pursuing green initiatives at no additional cost to the taxpayers," says Dan Davis, Berkeley County Supervisor, "In fact, these updates are expected to significantly save the County in energy costs, which translate into an overall savings to taxpayers."

The grant is part of the Federal Stimulus Energy Efficiency Funding for Local Governments. Berkeley County applied for the grant back in August and was awarded $337,765.00 to make the proposed energy-efficient improvements.
