Ranked High Nationally

According to an article in the Post & Courier (December 7, 2007), South Carolina ranks the third highest state in the United States with the number of teachers achieving National Board certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. 20% of South Carolina's Nationally Board Certified teachers work in Berkeley County. Berkeley County's public education system demands high expectations of parents, students and staff, enlists strong community support and offers numerous programs to fully prepare students for life after high school.

The Berkeley County School System educates approximately 27,000 students at 36 public schools. Seventeen new construction and renovation projects, funded by the 1999 school bond referendum, were completed within the last year. This includes a K-4 school which opened this year. A new, state-of-the-art high school is scheduled to open in Goose Creek in 2008.

Partnerships With Business and Industry

The local business community offers tremendous support to our schools. From offering hands-on internships, to mentoring and even employing students in their chosen field while still in high school, local companies actively encourage and enhance educational opportunities available to area students. This partnership with local business has proven successful, as Berkeley County graduates from the Class of 2006 earned over $14.5 million in scholarships

Higher Education

Berkeley County is proud to have a number of nationally recognized, quality higher education options easily accessible to residents. Schools offering numerous Ph.D's, Masters Degree, Bachelor's Degree, specialized certificate and personal enrichment programs for all ages are either located within Berkeley County or just a short drive away.
