Planning and Zoning | Comprehensive Plan
"Planning The Future While Preserving The Past"
Berkeley County Planning Commission is undergoing its second ever comprehensive planning process. The first plan, which was adopted in April 26, 1999, is up for state required review. The Berkeley County Planning Commission with the assistance of the Berkeley County Planning Staff and the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments Staff will be undergoing workshops, community meetings, and in depth staff and public review to present a new comprehensive plan in 2009 which will help the Planning Commission and County Council guide the future growth of Berkeley County.
The title of the comprehensive plan is "Planning the Future While Preserving the Past" which was coined by the members of the Planning Commission and acts as a guiding principal for this plan. Berkeley County has a rich history which the Planning Commission is committed to preserving as well as properly planning for a future that respects the special needs or each individual area of the county.
Often times citizens do not know the best route to get involved in local government. Participating in the comprehensive planning process is probably the most rewarding process and one in which the citizens have the most input. The comprehensive planning committee is very interested in gathering the citizens, landowners, and visitors thoughts of Berkeley County and its future, so please take a few moments to fill out a survey and mail it in or drop it off at the county planning department. Also, please get involved and come to our local meetings when the comprehensive planning committee visits over 10 locations around the county in the next year to gather input and hear local concerns that vary from place to place. We will use this information to form our draft plan and present it to council in mid 2009.
The comprehensive plan consists of nine elements which analyze growth and guide future development and projects in the county.
